DW Brassie (Gold)
Tied by Scott Bilben
The Brassie was a fly that had fallen out of favor in my fly box over time for other patterns. Sometime this past year I came across the article 'Brassed Off' by Dave Wiltshire on the Hatches Blog. I really like the simple aesthetic of his version. I cranked out a bunch in ahost of colors this past year and fished it everywhere (including hard water). The gold colored variation was a solid producer for me.
Hook: #14 1187 Scud (#12 - #22)
Bead: Gold
Abdomen: Gold Ultra Wire
Thread: 6/0 Lt. Cahill
Thorax: Rust Squirrel Bright
1. Wrap on wire at the bend of the hook, leaving about an 1-1/2" tag end (this
will become the rib)
2. Wind the wire forward up to the bead, keeping the wraps tight together.
3. Now wind the rib forward back over the top with wider spacing toward the bead
head. Be careful not to allow the rib to slip between
the body wraps.
4. Catch both loose wire tags with thread and trim.
5. Wrap dubbing around thorax and whip finish.
These are so fast and easy to tie that they are almost disposable and can be
done up in any color variation you can think of.
