Elk Hair Caddis

elkcaddisbrown.jpg (10537 bytes)

Hook: TMC 100 #14-18    Thread: Tan or brown 6/0     Dubbing: Tan or light brown    Hackle: Ginger, palmered    Wing: Tan elk hair

Comments: This is a standard dry fly for a caddis hatch in southeast Minnesota.  Vary colors of the elk hair - such as gray and the size of these flies.  You'd be amazed at how the #18 pattern will be just the right one the trout are keying on.

Henryville Special

Hook: TMC 100 #14-18     Thread: Black or brown 6/0   Body: Olive floss or dubbing   Palmered Hackle: Grizzly    Hackle: Ginger or dark ginger     Wings: Two natural duck quill segments, tent style

Comments: This is a common dry fly throughout the spring season.  Both these styles are successful, as well as the black caddis in #18.

A fishing pal, Greg Moen, showed me how to skip these along over the riffles.  Using heavier tippet, the fish were all over the skipping caddis.  It's quite an exciting way to fish.
