Comments: Ross Mueller, author of Upper Midwest Trout Flies - and how to fish them, spoke to the Hiawatha Chapter a few years ago about early season flies that he uses.  He couldn't stress enough how many trout that he stomach pumped had terrestrials, specifically beetles and ants, in them early in the year.  This is an easy pattern to tie with many individual variations such as using black deer hair in place of a foam body.

The Black Wet Fly is a good nymph pattern here as it imitates a drowned terrestrial.
