Griffith's Gnat

Hook: TMC 100 (16-22) Mustad 94840 (14-20)

Thread: Black 8/0

Body: Peacock herl

Rib: Fine gold wire (optional)

Hackle: Grizzly palmered

Comments: This is a pretty straight forward tie with the grizzly hackle being tied at the shank of the hook and palmered forward towards the eye.  Carry these is a variety of sizes during the winter and early spring season.  On warm days you'll be surprised by the amount of surface activity that can take place.  A fine tippet (7X or even 8X) is always a must.

Midges just don't appear in the winter, so be sure to have a midge box with you at all times (I learned this the hard way one fall day :)).
