Hare's Ear Nymph

Hook: TMC 3769 #10-16

Thread: Black, brown, gray 8/0

Tail: Wood duck fibers

Body: Dubbing of choice (gray is popular)

Rib: Gold oval tinsel

Thorax: Hare's ear, Awesome Possum, etc

Wing Case: Mallard or goose feather (I tie these flies weighted) Head: A bead head is sometimes tied in as well. Pearlescent krystal flash also makes an exceptional wing case.

Comments: This is a versatile nymph like the pheasant tail nymph.  It also should be kept in a variety of colors (gray, brown, olive etc.) to imitate whatever nymph is popular in the stream you're fishing.  It is an effective winter and late winter pattern as well.  Recently, I have had success in the spring time imitating an emerging Dark Hendrickson, as well as late in the year when fishing the ephoron leukon hatch (the white mayfly).  The upper left picture above has a few more tail fibers than I usually tie them, but a variety is always a plus.  It does not have a wing case - a realistic touch to nymphs.  Try some in a flashback material - clear, black, etc.  Many Hare's Ears are tied weighted with a trailing nymph behind it.  A bead head in copper or gold is always an option as well.
