Mole Fly (a Charlie Craven original)

Submitted by Bob Collier
The original is dubbed with beaver and has a mallard CDC wing. I have tied it with Awesome Possum and Redhead duck CDC (complements of some nice Redhead Drakes from North Dakota this season)
It is an extremely easy tie and works well in other color variations. I fish it as a trailer from a Beatis or Adams dry on a greased tippet, it hangs low in the water suspended by the CDC.
Hook: TMC 2487 18-22
Thread: 14 brown
Dubbing: Dark Brown Awesome Possum
Wing: Redhead Drake CDC natural grey.
Instructions: Start with 2 CDC feathers, even up the tips and measure the length of the hook shaft. Tie in CDC in front of the eye with the tips extending forward keeping them on top of hook shaft. Trim off butt ends at an angle and wrap thread back to half way point of the hook bend. Dub in a tapered body to the wing, pull wing material back and whip finish the fly in front of wing (behind the eye). The wing will extend over the eye at a slight angle. You’re done!!
