Olive Caddis

Tied by Warren Frank

It's a real easy fly to tie, but works well.  I made it to be a "throw away" fly, so if you lose some it doesn't matter.  It's a good fly to throw up near root wads and other areas where you risk getting snagged and could lose a fly.  I can easily tie a dozen in an hour.  I've included a picture of the fly, as well as a picture of a real caddis pupa.  I think the fly pattern is a pretty good "quick and dirty" imitation of the real pupa.

Hook:  #16 nymph hook
Bead:  Small black metal bead
Abdomen:  Small piece of Ultra Chenille (also called Vernille), with one end
tapered by quickly touching it to a match or lighter flame.
Wing Buds:  Black Krystal Flash
Thorax:  Black dubbing mixed with some peacock Ice Dub

Note:  The wings on a caddis pupa begin growing on the ventral size of the
caddis pupa, and migrate to the doral side as they prepare to "emerge."  Take
a look at the wings on the real caddis picture.

Fish the fly in riffles and faster moving water where caddis live.
