Gabriel's Trumpet

Tied by Gary Meier

Hook:  Heavy wire scud hook such as Daiichi 1120 – Sizes 10 – 16

Bead:  Gold size appropriate to hook

Weight:  .015 lead-free wire

Tails:  Two tan, gold, yellow, or amber goose biots

Rib:  Fine red copper wire

Abdomen:  Gold Flashabou or Krystal Flash (I used Krystal Flash)

Wing Case:  Mottled brown turkey primary feather or Bug Skin, Thin Skin, or Scud Back (I used the turkey)

Thorax:  Tan ostrich herl (I used brown)

Collar:  Ginger or tan hen hackle (try finding ginger hen that is small enough to use on 12s and smaller!!  I used a gingerish brown)

This is the official recipe.  I modified it when I first tied it because of not having exactly the materials called for in the recipe.   The modification seemed to work well when I used it last summer, so that’s what I have tied for the swap.  My modifications are shown in parenthesis above.

Tying :

1.      Bend down hook barb and slip on  bead.

2.      Wrap lead-free wire from the center hook to the bead.

3.      Trim wire and push wire into the hole in the bead.

4.      Attach thread directly behind the wire and tie in two goose biots – about half the length of the hook shank,

5.      Attach red wire rib with the end of the wire against the lead-free wire wraps.

6.      Fold a strand of Krystal Flash over the thread and slide the strand down to the hook shank.

7.      Wrap back over the doubled Krystal Flash to the tail and then return thread to the lead-free wire..

8.      Wrap Krystal Flash forward to thread, tie off, and trim.

9.      Tie in section of mottled turkey feather about herl as wide as hook gap and attach over the lead-free wire wraps.

10.   Attach two ostrich herl and wind them forward to bead.

11.   Attach hen hackle, take two to four tight wraps in front of the ostrich herl, tie off and trim.

12.  Pull turkey section forward over the thorax secure it with a few tight wraps, trim turkey section, and whip finish thread against bead.

13.   Add a drop of head cement to your thread wraps.

Experience with the G.B.

I fished this fly with good success last summer.  I found it really worked well deepish runs on the Root.  The Trumpet can also be tied in black and (?) pink.
